Preparation for pregnancy – are your nipples ready to breastfeed?

Breastfeeding  - how to make your nipples ready

I know that it such a topic, soooo special for the future mothers. And for those who already have babies and are happily feeding, this information I am going to talk about will be just to spread the word about this.

Based on my personal experiences I would love to boost a bit more avarenes about preparation of nipples for the breastfeeding process. Breastfeeding is natural to all mammals but I feel that all the animals has much more preparation with it or their sense of instinct for feeding is better than ours. In case of human beings it is sometimes whole science about it and there is nothing being taught before and nothing comes by itself easily.

There are usually three main types of nipples, according to the picture

My concern now is how to avoid pain and fight with babies and usage of special cups “kloboucky” for nipples while feeding your baby if it is not necessary.  Babies does not like it much, at least what I have seen and for every mum is also more difficult whole process of feeding with them.

So my only advice is: while being pregnant, please let your gynecologist and also lactation specialist check your nipples if they are well formed for the future feeding or if you should use special kind of cups “formovaci kloboucky” which will make the shape of your nipples suitable for feeding. You will then avoid troubles after giving birth and you can then focus more only on techniques of feeding.

Please check equipment from company MEDELA and also this article about flat or in bodied nipples.

I found also another interesting article more from surgery point of view, I even did not know that as last possibility surgery can help. Please read more here too

Another article is also very useful, it is 10 tips how to make feeding easier, so just get inspired, nothing more.

Whole the articles are in czech, but there is such a great tool as translate.google.com so in nowadays does not matter in which language we are searching :)

I wish you keep reading and keep feeding easily.

And please other mums which are reading this blog, can you add here your own experience? Did you need help with feeding, did you face some struggles while starting to feed? Share with us and help our friends to get ready. Thanks

And believe me feeding is wonderful but hard process. But if you manage the reword will come. I was feedign Edie for 15 months and Carlito is starting his 2nd month already :)

Sweet little something……….end of breastfeeding

Time of sweet touch, sweet moments are over :)

You know how controversial is breastfeeding?

(Source: Jan Saudek  photographer)

In the beginning you might probably hate that,  and do you know why?

  1. It hurts
  2. you have injuries of your nipples
  3. you spend most of the time by feeding your baby, you do not have time for yourself
  4. you are smelling like milk, if you have a lot like most of my friends then you are washed in your own milk and you can feel it everywhere, if you hear your baby crying your breast start to spill milk even you do not want :)
  5. your body can hurt also, because not all the feeding positions are comfortable.

But on the other hand:

  1. you will never be that close to your baby like in those moments
  2. you will never feel that soft touch and warm breath of your baby that close
  3. in this moment of feeding you are so close, nobody is disturbing you and you can enjoy and feel each other
  4. all the pains are forgotten in that sacred moment………..baby is healing you and the spilled milk is curing you too.
  5. as long you are used to breastfeed as long you are getting used to and than you do not want to stopped.
  6. you know that if your baby is sick or has some pains or is just fussy, your breast will always help..it is calming
  7. the mother milk is the best ” milk shake” in the world……….the best balance of vitamins, antibodies and minerals. Also it carries all the important information and builds a stronger social connection among mother and child.

So if you are breastfeeding like me until your child reaches 15 month and 28 days ( I stopped breastfeeding Edie on 20. 6. 2010… coincidently Father’s day), had 8 teeths and endless number of night and hours spend with each other you feel THAT YOU LOST SOMETHING and that SOMETHING will never come back.

But what have changed since the time I am not breastfeeding him.

  • He is sleeping better
  • He is not chasing in my cleavage his “baby bottles”
  • Eide is more calmer, although I can not use my milk anymore as pain killer, but he seems to be fine
  • He got nearly immediately mouth rush but now it is fine again.
  • He started to kiss me and Carlos and other people much more, he is not that desperately tight to me and when I am leaving home he is not crying that much anymore.
  • And the last my breast was looking fuller………hmmmm start again my “plain time” heheh I can do a sport again without any side “jumping effect” :)

But I have to confess to you my friends. That I will miss this moments and it took me a long time to decide when should be the LAST DAY. Really I was finishing some time already, but it was such a hard decision.

I will wait until Edie’s sibling will come and if nature allows me again I will breastfeed again and enjoy this sacred moments once more.

I LOVE IT and believe me I want to experienced it again. I would strongly recommend every mother to breastfeed her child. You will never feel more women than in that moment. This is the moment when WOMEN is wining over MEN. And I know how many of them is envying us that we have this special  and unique privilege over them!

When something old is ending something new is rising!

Breastfeeding and babies curiousness

Babies are sons and daughters of curious mother nature

What I wanted to speak about is the little sharing of my personal experience so far. I would like to safe you from the cry of hungry babies by warning you about their curiousness. My son Edie was curious since he was born but within the time his interest in surrounding environment increase in that level that when I want to breastfeed I have to be aware that there is nothing special around what could disturb him.

The days where I could breastfeed and read, write the blog, watch the movie or eat in the same time are definitely gone. Because when I start to do something else than to keep watching him and being calm while breastfeeding he immediately start to turn his head just to be aware what the hell is happening behind his back and he can not see that!

And the result of all my time spend is, that I do both thing just by 50% and the outcome is that Edie is in the end still hungry because most of the milk was spilled out and my post is full of mistakes because I had to calm him down often.

So I have learned that I have to give him space to spend  his eating time calmly. And actually no wonder, who would be happy to be disturbed while eating. Non of us likes that so even our the most little one do not like that either.

My advice: If you want to avoid to have hungry and crying baby even you think that you fed him, be sure that you ensured calm environment around and that you can say that your baby was really eating and not being disturbed.

By that you safe your time because you do not have to feed your baby in few minutes later after you finished breastfeeding and you will make your baby happier and much more smiley.

“Do not be messy with your baby and yourself :)

Loose breeast does not mean lack of milk

Loose breast does not mean worries

I got a question few days ago while speaking with my friend. She got a baby girl and she is living similar things as I experienced. And since she asked me few questions I have been worried about before also I decided to tell you about that and protect you from worries.

breastShe started to breastfeed and after the beginning problems of little injuries on nipples and over swollen breast because of huge production of milk she got a new feeling. Her breast was becoming loose and she started to be worry that she will not have enough milk. It was about 3 weeks after her girl was born. But do not worry about this new condition. Now I know that but in that time there were running many thoughts in my head. And the firs one was, Oh my God I am loosing milk. …………..But not really.

It is just natural development of the milk production. Because moms body is getting used to. From colostrum (firs yellowish milk) is becoming “normal milk” and it does not create that big tensions in the breast anymore like before. In my case I even did not have any leakages of milk while I was not breastfeeding so I did not have to wear special pads in the bra, so my worries were even bigger. But as I said the tensions in the breast will become lover after first few weeks and it does not mean that we would be loosing milk.

Important is to check 2 things:

  1. baby is happy when you finished feeding, it is not crying because of hunger
  2. the weekly wait gain should be from 150-300g

If those two conditions are met, there is no worry on the place :)

There are big changes happening in the women body just have a look on the picture, so do not worry about that. Your baby is the best mark of your milk production. My husband few times called our son as “milk bag”  :) which is true picture of his proper diet.

Injuries on nipples while breastfeeding

My dear breastfeeding mums…………..sometimes we need to stand some pain :)

fun breast

breastI just wanted to write this post because I got hurt  by my breastfeeding son and I want you to avoid this condition. After I have read few articles I learned that I have done few things wrongly and that’s why I got my injury.

  1. I did not keep the right position of my son while breastfeeding him
  2. I let him chew my nipple a bit longer than it was needed :)

Now I got regadas and red nipple and it is not pleasant, I am applying Bepanthen cream which is one of the best thing ever. It heals me so fast and nicely, but I will try to avoid any other injury again.

If you want to learn more about possible problems with breast than keep reading here, I have learned many useful things:

Nursing fathers………..scandal or practical approach?

My dear frineds,

I just made my hands free for some time to be able to share with you interesting and bit controversial article with life approach I have read few days ago. NURSING FATHERS this term is used in several articles related to the fathers early involvement in the child care while mom is nursing. But this in not the case I want to write about now.
Nobody mentioned also fact that there are some fathers who enjoyed “being nursed”. Yes there are fathers at least in my home country which actually enjoys more to drink mothers milk rather than cow or goat milk.
In the beginning when I was interested in breastfeeding topics I have read many articles, how to nurse my baby properly, how often, how whole process actually works, how to boost my milk production etc. But once I found this interesting information. Do not think that I am breastfeeding my husband, this is far from reality but at least we have openly discussed the benefits which might nursing of fathers bring.
Actually what most of the moms described was as follows:

  • when their breast was full of milk and their nipples were already hurting from milk pumps and constant baby drinking the fathers served as great milk pumps because they were softer than any other machine :)
  • It was easy to explain to dad how fast is milk created in the breast and he could help to drink milk especially at night even without waking up the mum and he helped her with milk overproduction
  • there were cases where the mum did not have enough milk so the father helped her to sustain the milk production because he tried to drink always after his baby finished and he softly stimulated the production system
  • fathers lost their jealousy feelings towards their infants which were closer to mum all the time because of nursing and in some cases it created closer intimite moment for the couple.
  • the immunity of whole family improved because of drinking mothers milk rich for antibodies.

So I am not pushing any parents for this practice but I found it interesting to share. So moms feels open to the idea if your husband come and asks whether he can drink a bit of this ambrosial drink :) because as you can see it has its advantages. But rather keep this in your homes not every public could understand this…..ups :)

10 reasons why to breastfeed……….and there are thousand of other reasons

Hi dears,

I decided to write one of the many posts on breastfeeding, because I found how much underestimated is nursing still from practical point of view. I think that I do not have to mention here that nursing has one of the most important reasons and it is healthy diet with all the needed nutritious features which your baby should obtain.

Just shortly you can learn more about breast milk:

But what I found really beneficial for practical life is this:

  1. DSCN1952when nursing you do not have to care about the preparation of formula, if your baby is hungry you just give him your breast whenever and wherever. No preparation, no warming up process, no checking whether you have prepared enough for some trip, nothing.
  2. it is much more economical. Some babies eat more some less and in nowadays the formula costs quite a lot.
  3. nursing creates closer tights between mom and baby, it boosts their relationship forever
  4. nursing helps to shape your body back to the previous state, because by nursing your baby it creates stimulus and your uterus is working and shrinking faster than it would do without this stimulation
  5. since nursing especially for mom with smaller boobies, like I had :) , I got some extra Cm’s to my perimeter and extra beauty points :)
  6. milk brings the most important nutrition to your baby, boosts his stamina and create important base for his whole life
  7. DSCN2060nursing makes your hands free to do some other things :) , by using nursing pillow you let your baby drink and like right now I can keep writing this post :) and have dinner in the same time.
  8. nursing gives you control over entertained baby………for example you can cut his nail, clean his eyes, ears.Hugs him, kiss him just to enjoy :) and he will not move so you will not cut more than you wanted :)
  9. when breastfeeding you have time to rest, I used to lye in the bed, pull my son closer to me and keep feeling and enjoying our common time
  10. nursing has also calming effect, if your baby has any pain or just can not fall asleep than by chewing your nipple and little of mothers milk will make him sleep like angel and than you have time for yourself and your partner :)

So I am strongly encouraging every mom to keep breastfeeding at least 6 month till the baby starts to eat also some small finger food (weaning food).

Breast milk ROCK THE WORLD :)

Breastfeeding (nursing) tips

My dear friends,

today I would like to share some ideas and also learnings which I got after two months of nursing.

dscn0562Sometimes I had doubts whether I have enough milk, because my darling was crying more and I did not want to use artificial powder milk and then I heard from my mom (who anyway was not nursing me and have no experience with that)………..”my dear you have probably weak milk”…… and then I started to search more and I asked a lactation specialist and also our pediatrician and even other moms how this works. Is it possible, that I do have “weak milk”?. The answer was NO. There does not exist such a weak or strong milk. There is only one type of milk, although I have to confess that I had experienced that if I eat properly, it means a lot and especially meat, eggs and milk products, my breast became full of milk faster and I could see that my darling needs less effort to drink it out and he is happier and fully satisfied.

So I now know that the myth of such a “weak milk” isn’t true but the quality (or better say, quantity) of milk depends on your dietary habits.

Another concern of mine was whether the structure of my diet influenced the creation of gases of my baby. Because my son do suffer quite a lot of gases.

The answer is, not really. I recognized that if I will not eat properly with a large variety of dishes my son will not have all needed vitamins in his milk and anyway he used to have gases no matter what I ate. I asked also my closest once whether it is normal and they said that it is. It seems that specially guys do suffer from gases more than girls so the most important is to let my baby burp after every drink, even he falls asleep because otherwise the gases get accumulated and then he suffers much more. You should hear his scream if I let him sleep and did not let him burp after the nursing.

I was also looking for the things which should help to boost my milk production since I am not any milk factory. I do not have leasking problems like other moms. I do not have to wear nursing pads in my bra……… actually I do not wear a bra, (I hate that feeling of being tied :) )so I was not sure whether I do have enough milk for my son. But as I see that he is growing and even putting weight I do not have this concern any more.

What I can strongly recommend for increasing nursing capacity is drinking tea for nursing mothers, there are various brands and today I also found syrup for making refreshing drinks. I like their taste and it helps to boost milk production and also reduce gases creation.

Another important fact is the demand of my baby. Sometimes he is asking for more drink specially after I am exercising  and playing with him, then he gets more thirsty afterwards. And really important is to consider the so called periods of “fast growing” when is the baby much more hungry. It is 3rd and 6th week and than 3rd and 6 th month. In that time baby will be like vampire. He will try to drink everything what you will have available. For example Edie grown in his 3rd and 4th week 5 cm and put nearly 1 kg

So as I learned the most important is:

  • to keep a proper diet
  • to rest as much as possible
  • to drink nursing teas
  • to give your baby as many times milk as is asking for (do not be miss leaded wit his cry for tiredness or desire to play)
  • to consider the fast growing periods in the babies development and his higher demand

Good luck?

Breastfeeding – intimite moment

dscn0123

dscn0268

My dear friends,

I just got free hands to share with you few lines about breastfeeding. This special moment which connects mothers with their babies, since they do not have any more their belly cordon physically available. So I consider breastfeeding as one of the invisible tight among mum and baby.

I have learned few things regarding to this topic, and since they were crucial for me to understand for successful breastfeeding I hope that they will help you too.

When you breastfeed:

  1. Find a good position in which you can stay at least 30-45 minutes (sitting, lying).
  2. Always the baby has to go to you, do not bend your back……. I did that and within one week I got a strong back pain and my back would look like bow………. not nice and painful
  3. Your baby should be fed as many times per day as he/she asks for….. it means every hour if asks, this is min. interval for breastfeeding (so the model situation can look like………you are breastfeeding your baby for 45 min – max. time and then you let him/her to rest for 15 min) and if he/she asks again you can start the whole process again :) so you will breastfeed about 12-15 times per day, sometimes more.
  4. In the beginning you should feed from both breasts in one time, because your milk is not milk yet (it is called colostrum – it has yellowish color like melted butter, it is full fat and full energetic “drink”) and also you will feel lot of tensions in your breast so release possible pain. After the week or more it is individual start to breastfeed always only from one breast in one feeding session, because now you have already full milk which contains more liquid front milk and more fatty and energetic back milk. So you have to give a time to your baby to be able to drink both kinds of milk. If your baby will drink only front milk because you will be changing your breast it can cause colic to him/her.
  5. I made the mistake, because at the hospital they told me that I should keep an interval of 2-3 hours between feeding, but my baby was crying because of hunger/thirst……… now I know……… something different is if your baby is tiny and is not asking for food……… then you have to wake him up to feed him and let him to put some weight. The interval then is 2-3 hours and over night max. 4 hours
  6. Do not give your baby anything else than milk, he/she does not need water or tea if he is thirsty. Do you remember that you have front and back milk. So basically front milk is for thirst and back milk is for hunger. So the result is that your baby does not need anything else than your milk.
  7. If the baby is falling asleep, just softly caress him behind his ear or under the chin….. it will stimulate him and he will start to drink, but also let him rest, this sucking is for him quite hard work.
  8. When you breastfeed, keep in mind that kids should feel comfortable also, when you hold him in your arms the baby should have in one line his ear, arm and hip.

There are also endless amount of videos shoving how you should offer your breast and different positions used (have a look for breastfeeding tips). So feel free to have look on youtube or other pages. For Slavic languages reader I can recommend the Lactation league website.

My son is waking up so maybe some other things will come later :)

Yeah I fed him, our session took about 45 min, but now if you could see his smile saying “I am full”, I would eat him :) if I could.

I just remember that to this topic belongs also beginning of lactation. Because the birth of my son was done through C-cut at the end, obviously my lactation started a bit later, since the hormones which started the process were produced a bit later. Because I did not know this information I got scared at the beginning, because usually lactation starts within three days after labor day. And surprising for me was also fact that babies do not have to eat for 3 days anything because they have still some “food storage” from uterus and their prenatal time. It is totally normal if new born baby used to loose about 10-15% of their weight after they are born. We as mums do not have to be worry at all. Edie had 3130 g when he was born and after 5 days when doctors send us home he had 2880 g. So he lost about 200 g and I was told that if he lost more it would have been normal. This case is specially in breastfed babies.

But I wanted to tell you something about lactation. As I mentioned above I started to be worry that it will not come. In the Czech Republic, my home country, is common practice, that after mum delivers, they bring the baby within 30 min after the labor. This early and short period of time is important for start up of the lactation process. The baby started to suck and even I did not have any milk that time it was clear signal to my body that the lactation process should start. And really in 4 days it started. Specifically over night from 3rd to 4th day. I started to feel that my breast is hurting, getting tense and becoming bigger. My ordinary size was something between “nothing and something”, we call it size “A” but in that time my breast grown into the size between B and C………… surprise I got boobs :) and also it was full of milk.

In this case is really important to have baby near by you and started to breastfeed as fast as possible, because it is one of the ways how to release the pain which appear. What you have to do with your hard breast is to make it softer for your baby, especially area around your nipple otherwise baby will not be able to suck the milk. You can manage by preheating your breast by solar light or warm towel which you will apply at least for 15 min before you start to breastfeed and you can either use your hand or milk extractor/pumps to take some milk out. This process is not pleasant believe me. But on the other hand is much better to heat your breast, to extract some milk, even your breast hurt, because then you will release pain from produced milk and also you will avoid fever from stacked milk in your breast. Fortunately I did not experienced that, but my room mate did and it was not pleasant to see her. She got 39°C and in the same time she had to take care about baby. So If I can advice you, resist the pain and uncomfortable for few days  because then the production of milk will calm down to the amount which your baby needs and your breast will not hurt any more.

So when you are at home from the hospital, just take your time and if you know that you should breastfeed at 5am just rather wake up at 4am, take warm shower, make massage to your breast, start to pump your nipples and prepare your breast for your baby.

I hope that these paragraphs did not sound scary, I just wanted to support you, when you will feel some uncomfort. But believe me it will last only few days and thanks to hormones which are produced since you deliver and your mums love you can manage everything…….. simply hold on and be strong!
