Edie and his vocabulaly

Edie is speaking….or let’s say mumbling something on his own

But starts to make sense and it is very funny
I was thinking that after his 2 years B-day I will not add many things about him, but there are all the time new and new moments which are worth to remember, really. Now I am going to write and share regarding to his language skills.

Before I will share with you his vocabulary I would love to share few concerns, thought, advices and observations which I have done.

How is Edie learning language the fastest and the most effective

  1. through listening…..the most efficient seems to be for him to be listening new words all over again and the most effective is when he can also see, feel or touch the thing we are talking about. It is also sufficient if he can see it, but he remembers the most while practicing of doing. I am basically describing him everything what is he doing and he is repeating like monkey, if he wants………and he want now :)
  2. He loves repetition, so I started to use also our magnet board to write him down some words and then I say them out loud. this kind of flesh card method should help him also to learn reading fast, so lets see.
  3. He love to be watching fairytales, so as my grandma said, it is great if you I am sitting next to him and I am making comments, what are we watching, what is happening there, which kind of things he can see and observe that moment……seems to be efficient a lot too. He loves the most our czech KRTECEK……the mole is the king…..and it has very nice stories which are easy to describe and learn from it. i can recommend to every parents. Just search on you tube. Here is our the most popular fairytale

Krtecek a auticko (The mole and the car) enjoy it with us:

And now after few advices, here is already the active Edie vocabulary of now he is 2 years and 3 weeks old.
he is using simple words and 2 word connections among them

And this vocabulary is only from few last days of observation, he is adding everyday another words, but soon he might speak fully, so hard to catch up all.

Hugs my dear friends and family…….for grandma time to learn Edies words before teaching him Spanish :)

How to play and teach your baby?

Hi prodigies, playfull miracles :)

Play is the chief way that infants learn how to move, communicate, socialize, and understand their surroundings. And during the first month of life, your baby will learn by interacting with you. One of the first things your baby will learn is to associate the feel of your touch, the sound of your voice, and the sight of your face with getting his or her needs for comfort and food met. You can encourage your newborn to learn by stimulating your newborn’s senses in positive ways — with smiles, smoothing sounds, and gentle caresses.

I bet that most of you my dear friends when playing with your kids were thinking which game is suitable for my little one. Do I do right things? Is this or that game accurate for this age?

I have heard from my mum when playing with my 1-2 month old son that thing I try to do is too much, that I should let him sleep and let him entertain by himself…………..but it did not work out. My son is not that kind of baby who sleeps 20 hours per day………..no way…………He wants to play, he wants to have fun, he wants to explore.

Due the fact that my baby is asking for attention nearly all the time, except nursing time :) I was curious about different ways of entertainment for him and which kind of games and toys are accurate for his age…………and actually we should not limit our babies by age but we should more observe how they are behaving and what they are asking for. So I am trying to play with my little angel not only regarding to his age but also with practices for older babies. And it is curious that he likes that also.

I would like to share with you now some links as inspiration what to consider when playing with your infants.

Vision Games

A newborn baby can only focus about 8 to 10 inches from his face and many newborn babies are also cross-eyed. Don’t worry, in most cases this will pass naturally. You can help your baby to use his eyes by moving a finger or object slowly from side to side in front of his eyes. A black and white patterned object may also be interesting to look at and follow. Newborn babies have a hard time distinguishing other colors. But go slowly, if you move the object too fast, your baby will not be able to follow it.To practice the combination of seeing and hearing, you can pick or make up a small rhyme or song that you use every time you play this vision game with your baby. Since babies are routine lovers, he may soon recognize the situation and appreciate it even more. The ability of your baby to read, learn how to concentrate and enjoy is hidden in the everyday practice and proper tool to  use. We started to practice with Edie flash card show with black and white pictures specially designed for infant. And  we can really see how much he is enjoying………. he is smiling on the pictures, his eyes are widely open and he calms down always when he is getting impatience. He simply enjoys. In this way I can recommend you a lot all the products which are advertised on BrillKids.com there are not just products for sale but also free softwares to be used for you and your baby to enjoy playing and learning at once.

Imitation

dscn0335dscn1860Something fascinating about newborn babies is that they can imitate. Pick a moment when your baby is alert and content. Lift him or her up close to your face (since a newborn baby’s vision is poor) slowly stick your tongue out. Keep it out for a while and then start all over. If you give your baby enough time, chances are he’ll stick his tongue out as well. He might first look away, as if concentrating on the task, then look back at you and start imitating. You can do different faces also in the position he or she prefer. You will see that the infant will start to smile. We tried that with Carlos and Edie was laughing on him and me. It is a magical moment when you can see your baby smile and laugh and feeling happy.

Hearing Games

Your baby is likely to at least recognize mom’s voice from the time before being born. If dad and siblings spoke a lot and close to mom’s belly, you child might also recognize their voices. Hearing any of you talk or sing and at the same time look into your eyes is fun for a newborn baby. Within a month or two, he’ll start showing his appreciation by smiling back and even start “talking” to you. Talking to your baby will also make him feel safe despite his new, strange surroundings outside the uterus.  What we proved as beneficial is also listening different kind of music, from soothing one when Edie is tired (we have classical music such as Mozart or Vivaldi for kids CD……….. you can actually download also some free classical music from Munchking download)

Bonding Games

dscn1883Rock your baby and sing a gentle lullaby. Even take your top off to allow skin contact. Newborn infants have a well developed smell and a sensitive skin, so being close to you, hearing your voice and smell MOM (or dad!), is heaven! And it can ended up like this :) The most important is that you will find his position. Our son Edie loves the most position on his belly. Maybe because this position prevent him from gas pain and because in his 2 month age he started to produce lot of salivas he is not choking.

Exercising

dscn0491Your baby will love also moving as itself and practicing his muscles will become his daily joy. I try to encourage Edie to crawl as soon as possible to be able to explore he world around him on his own, so I do simply exercising with him on daily basis always few minutes after each nursing. In this early age you can exercise your baby mostly by placing him on his belly and letting him crawl with your help. Since they have still imprinted the kicking reflex he will try to kick into your hands and he will slide on his belly forward. Try to keep his hands aside of his body so that he can lift his head. Another good exercise is on the gym ball, place your baby on his belly (never on his back in this age!) and hold his hands and let him lift his head. You can also swing a little the ball from side to side.

Baby-Pushups: Place the infant on his stomach across your legs while in a sitting position. With his knees on one of your legs and his hands on the other, this builds balance and strength, and teaches him to hold his weight with his hands. This is a new and interesting vantage point for him and encourages him to move his head and neck.

Good luck with your playing………I will be really happy if you have any other games to share here with me please let me know…….I am playfull prodigy also but also my imagination has its limits…….so more brains know more :)

Dalton system (learning is fun and joy not torture!!!)

Dear friends,

If you are considering which school should your kid attend try to think about this educational system/approach which was developed long time ago and which breaks all the awful rules of conservative learning approach and give your child the possibility of joy from learning and exploring new things.

I am writing this post because I was helping  my previous primary school teacher, now applicant for chief executive officer of the primary school, with the administration of her final thesis about the Dalton system applied in her school.  I got interested in the results she had observed during her 19 years of practical experience and how the Dalton system developed and is applied now in the primary school I attended  many years ago :-) .

Dalton school plan is characterized by giving the freedom, independence, boosting cooperation, integration and creativity of kids in order to contribute to their development and enrichment of their intelligence and potential.

“Dalton is not any method or system. Dalton is an influence”

I got to know about the Dalton system through my primary school teacher in The Czech Republic and got more interested in it, because I was attending her classes since 1990-1995 and she as a new hired teacher started to experiment and applied this system in her teaching methods. I do remember how I was looking forward to do all given tasks because later I could enjoy leisure activities like playing, dancing, painting etc.  Before this teacher came I had big problems with our old teacher, because I was not that kind of kid which would sit on its bottom whole hour and just listen. I used to finished my tasks, stood up and walked across the class and chat with my classmates…………….. of course this was according to conservative rules impermissible so a punishment for me followed :-)

My parents were becoming desperate from all the times they were called due “my undesired behavior”, but as we realized later, there was no problem on my side but in the old teacher approach. Later with the implentation of Dalton Plan I always reached the highest score and I did not have any problem with studying anymore. I finished as Master of economic sciences with an A mark (the best score) from my examinations and with an special recognition on my final thesis :-)

helen_daltonDalton system (Dalton Laboratory Plan) is not a new system. It got its name from the city Dalton in USA, where was implemented by the teacher Helen Parkhurst (1886-1973). She was unsatisfied with the current system and specifically she disliked that students, even they differ by their skills and abilities and working pace, had to work together under same speed and they had to learn the same topics (content). That’s why she started to use an individual working plan for the students and after two years in 1922 she got published  an education book based in the Dalton Education Plan.

This Dalton system fastly developed and spread to other countries such as Japan, China, India, USSR, Canada, Poland, Natherlands, etc.

The Dalton system differs from other alternative school system because it does not have uniform form. It is permanently developing, changing according to current social conditions and needs. Also every school is adopting their plans according to their instructions and every teacher can change also the plan according to the needs of his students and their specifics.  Helen Parkhurst experimented with the plan whole her life and she was open minded to new approaches and usage of new tools which should improve the quality of education and effectiveness.  Which means that the content of education according to Dalton plan is currently different from that one which was used 80 years ago.

What I like on the Dalton system are basic principles:  independence, freedom in the decision about the order of activities to perform, cooperation between students

The Dalton system can be applied in many ways.  At the primary school in the Brno is used specifically for the education of talented kids.  For better understanding I will briefly explain difference between “SMART” and “TALENTED” kid because this typology together with characteristics can be easily applied not only for the kids education but also in the case of communication towards adults.

SMART TALENTED
Knows how to answer Asks additional question
Is interested Is curious
Has good ideas Has extraordinary ideas
Answers on a given question Is interested in details, elaborates, completes
Is the leader of the group Is independent, often works alone
Simply learner Has already most of the knowledge
Is popular among other students Is more comfortable in the company of older students
Does understand the meaning Does make conclusions
Exactly copies given solution Creates new solution
Feels good in the kindergarten and school Feels good when he learns something new
Receives information Uses the information
Is persistent in observation Observes carefully
Is satisfied with studying and his results Is very self-critical

From this table and also from the study which my teacher gave me is visible how important is to take care about the talented kids and we have to consider that no matter which method or approach of education will be chosen we have to always appreciate and accept their special skills and talent. Specialy talented kids can be beneficial for whole society  in every sphere of our social life (medicine, modern technologies, arts or sport etc.). We just have to create the proper environment which will keep and boost their potential since early age.
